One of the main reasons that the Audubon Center at Debs Park was built in Northeast Los Angeles was to provide an opportunity for residents of this dense urban area to become more aware of the environment around them, and more active in environmental issues that affected them. Subsequently, the Center became involved in an effort to fight development of one of the last remaining pieces of open space in the area — Elephant Hill in El Sereno. After residents were successful in forcing the developer to get a new environmental impact review for their project, the developer sued the city. Now the city is going to resolve the issue by buying the site for a park — a terrific outcome for the neighborhood.
