Rare bird alert: Common Cuckoo in Watsonville

September 30th, 2012 · by Garrison Frost

We’re seeing a lot of talk on the listservs about a Common Cuckoo in Watsonville, CA. While the bird isn’t exactly rare, it’s extremely unusual to see it here in California. This is a bird that normally frequents Europe and Asia, though once in a while a migrant will fly off course to the United States, which is probably what happened here. Dinuk Magammana has seen the bird and taken some photos. Posted above is more of a stock image, by┬áChris Romeiks.

This extremely rare bird, never before seen south of Anchorage, AK along the Pacific Coast was fully viewed this evening for 20 minutes along the foot path just to the west of Ohlone Blvd. and Landmark School here in Watsonville, CA. Parking is available at the Nature Center in Ramsay Park, off Harkins Slough road, Watsonville, or the lot at Landmark School on Ohlone Blvd.
