678 Mountain Plovers!

December 30th, 2012 · by Garrison Frost

We spotted a short post to the Tulare birding listserv yesterday from John Lockhart of Visalia saying that he and another observer had stumbled onto a huge number of Mountain Plover — 678 of them, to be exact. The report was flagged by Audubon California’s Andrea Jones, who asked for more information. They told her that they’d seen the birds in Kings County near Kettleman City. Given the small global population and how hard they are to find, this is an amazing sighting of this very shy bird. (photo by Glen Tepke)
