Brown Pelicans heading inland, seeking food

July 30th, 2012 · by Garrison Frost

We’ve been following the reports of numerous Brown Pelicans appearing sick and hungry on California beaches. Now, we’re hearing that the birds are heading eastward to find food — into the Delta and other inland waters. Brian Sullivan from eBird noted on the birding listervs that the sightings were popping up in their system as never before. We hope this problem resolves itself soon. One of our colleagues visited Avila Beach this weekend and saw more than 100 juvenile Brown Pelicans suffering.

We were in Crescent City, Calif. about 2 weeks ago and the brown Pelicans were fine and abundant. They were diving for fish at the harbors and sitting on rocks about 2 feet from us. I took some of the best pictures I’ve ever taken of them. They were a treat, sounded beautiful and were very at ease with us. That pic of your pelican above is a different looking pelican. Ours weren’t grey with the red on the cheek area. Are there 2 different stages of the Brown Pelican??
